The Progressive Movement; it may have been short-lived but it sure impacted the way we run our government today.
The progressives were a party within a party; they had no place to call there own so they use to pack themselves in with the Stalwart Republicans and "Duke it out." They lost continually, and were led by the only successful politicians, a family by the name of Laffayette. Phil was the Governor of Wisconsin; Bob Jr. was the Senetor from Wisconsin, and Bob Senoir (before he died) was a Presidential candidate who dindn't fare too badly in his bid against Wilson. Progressevism can be comunicated today as Socialism because the term did not exist back then. Conditions were poor and they felt there best shot for the presidency of the United States was at hand during the depression. They decided to break away from the Stalwarts and create there own party; this became the death of them. The Democratic party was not really a contender until FDR took it by storm, but that's not the only thing that he took, let me explain:
Phil, between his terms, decided to go on a European excurrsion that led him to Nazi ruled Germany. He got to meet with Hitler and many other officials to understand the design of their government. He was svery impressed that Hitler was able to take the country that was most effected by the depression and turn it into the most prospering economy. Hitler implimented social works (government sponsored jobs) and as a result was able to put money in the hands of people so they can spend it on the goods that were being produced in their own country. The additional revenue gained was re-invested into the military which provided more jobs and more revenue. I'm sure this all sounds very familiar, maybe the same thing as the "New Deal"? Phil Lafayette was so impressed with Hitlers organization that he put together a committee to speak with president Roosevelt about what Hitler was doing. You have to understand the way Hitler constructed his infrastructure led to his military being better and well beyond everyone elses'. The neighboring countries thought WWI was the "War to end all Wars" so they didn't want to invest the little money they had into a military they thought they would never use. This was no secrect and Hitler knew that Europe was vulnerable. Progressevism can almost be viewed as Naziism with the dictator being the government. Look for my next post. As we conclude this thing |
